Timberline lakefront log home reflected in still morning water — hand-scribed logs, wraparound deck, stone chimney

Where Every Morning Begins With Water

The ridge beam went up on a Tuesday morning and by noon the whole crew had gathered on the subfloor just to look at the water framed between those logs. That view was always there — Timberline just built a window worthy of it. Delivery was two weeks ahead of schedule. Every joint is exactly what we were shown in the drawings.

We interviewed six builders over fourteen months. Timberline was the only one who brought us to a completed home before asking for a deposit. Standing in that kitchen — the logs still fragrant, the stone fireplace already seasoned — was when we stopped looking. The craftsmanship on our own home matched it exactly.

The access road is impassable four months a year. Timberline planned the entire material sequencing around a single weather window in October. Everything arrived, everything fit, nothing was wasted. When the snow came in November, the shell was closed. We were skiing from our own porch by February.

We've owned three vacation properties. This is the first one that feels like it was built specifically for us, not assembled from a catalog. The head scribe visited our lot three times during design. He knew which trees would eventually block the east view and adjusted the roofline accordingly. That kind of attention is not something you can buy — it has to be offered.

Something Their Grandchildren Will Inherit

Legacy homes replacing century-old structures on working land.

The farmstead reviews are different. These families weren't building vacation homes or investment properties. They were replacing something irreplaceable — and writing about it afterward.

We broke ground on a Tuesday in April, the same week my husband's parents moved off the land they'd worked for fifty-one years. They drove out from town on a Sunday in July to see what was rising on the old farmstead. Howard's father walked the perimeter twice without saying anything. Then he put his hand flat against one of the main logs — a Douglas fir we'd selected ourselves at the mill — and said 'this one will outlast us all.' He was right. He passed in October. The house was finished in December. We've kept his handprint in the guestbook we started the day we moved in, and every visitor since has added theirs beside it.

I want to describe what it is like to come home to a Timberline house after a long day. You park in the gravel, and before you reach the porch steps you can already smell the cedar. In winter it's wood smoke and cold air together. You open the front door — a solid eight-foot plank door that swings with the weight of something permanent — and the house is warm in a way that forced-air heat never produces. It's the logs. They hold the morning's warmth and release it slowly through the afternoon. My mother calls it 'the house that breathes.' She's eighty-two and she drives two hours to visit now, which she never did when I lived in a conventional home. I think she trusts the structure the way you trust an old friend.

We are both in our late sixties. We built this home with the specific intention that our children — and their children — will inherit it. That changes every decision. You choose the wider porch not because you need it now but because someday a grandchild will spend an entire summer afternoon on it. You choose hand-scribed logs over milled because in forty years the difference will be visible in ways you can't yet describe. You choose Timberline because their work is still standing and still beautiful in homes they built twenty years ago, and the families in those homes will tell you the same. We visited four of them before signing our contract. Every single homeowner said they'd do it again. That's the only review that matters.
